Aristotle’s principles as conditions

چکیده

In this paper I will argue that when Aristotle uses the word ‘ἀρχή’ (commonly translated as ‘principle,’ ‘beginning,’ ‘origin,’ or ‘starting-point’) he is often referring to what we call a condition, whether necessary, sufficient necessary and sufficient. To end discuss how conditions for being, change, knowledge, identified by Aristotle, can be equated ontological, physical noetic principles, respectively.

First Principles Thermodynamics of Minerals at HP–HT Conditions: MgO as a Prototypical Material

Ab initio thermodynamic properties, equation of state and phase stability of periclase (MgO, B1-type structure) have been investigated in a broad P–T range (0–160 GPa; 0–3000 K) in order to set a model reference system for phase equilibria simulations under deep Earth conditions. Phonon dispersion calculations performed on large supercells using the finite displacement method and in the framewo...

This claim has puzzled commentators since antiquity. It is usually taken to mean that the premisses of any deduction are material causes of the conclusion. By contrast, I argue that the claim does not apply to deductions in general but only to scien...
